There are all kinds of flooring options, but the ultimate rivalry will always be between carpet and wood flooring – in many ways, they represent the opposite ends of the spectrum in the world of what we walk upon.
How is that? Glad you asked, because that’s how we’re going to break it down:
<strong>Hard vs. Soft</strong>
Let’s face it: Wood is hard, and carpet is … usually not so hard. And, some carpeting is downright plush. The fact that carpet can offer this kind of range is what gives it an edge in this category. No carpet can replicate wood (any day now, science!), but a little variety when it comes to firmness and feel goes a long way.
<strong>Natural vs. Synthetic</strong>
To appease the sticklers, it must be noted that wood can be artificial and carpet can be organic, but for this exercise we’re assuming that wood is “natural” and carpet is “synthetic.” Ideologically, natural always wins over synthetic (“Death to the soulless droids!”), but wood wins again in terms of durability and longevity, which is where synthetics usually triumph. It’s a woody double-whammy.
<strong>Classic vs. Contemporary</strong>
Again, it’s not that carpet can’t have a classic look; it’s just that wood fully trumps it. Wood is the OG of the flooring world … aside from dirt, anyway. That said, this is strictly a matter of taste and it’s difficult to objectively say that a classic look is “better” than a contemporary one. It’s going to have to be a draw.
<strong>Warm vs. Cold</strong>
This is a tough one. Wood is often described as “warm” in its look, so it has that going for it, but it’s very often not actually warm to the touch and that’s no fun on a cold winter morning. Carpet, on the other hand, almost always feels good on the feet (if it’s clean). It’s just cozy on the toesies, and although we duly note that wood floors can be heated, it’s carpet by a hair … or a thread.
Throw in factors like cost, ease of installation and availability and it starts to look like a landslide, so we’re going to go with carpet on this one – even though wood is by far the classier option.
