Why You Need a Home Office

Okay, so maybe you, Mr. Laid-Back Retiree, don’t need (or want) a home office, but those who are working are doing so more than ever as they compete with the robot uprising, ruthless contract freelancers and bosses who increasingly fail to grasp the boundaries of work hours.

It’s a sad state of affairs when we’ve come to a point where we feel lucky to be able to work from home in addition to the work we already put in at the office, but such is the way of things for working Americans today. The goal, then, is to make our at-home work situation as comfortable and productive as possible.

Do I need a dedicated space or can my home office be multifunctional?

Telecommuters and others who work at home a lot will likely have a need for a full-blown office, but the rest of us may be able to make due with something more modifiable.

For those who fall in the latter group, consider a good-looking desk with a compact, storable chair as part of your bedroom décor. If that seems like too much, maybe you’ll be able to make do with working at the kitchen table and simply making sure you have the paperwork you need close at hand by using clever storage.

What kinds of “extras” should I put in my home office?

Office desks, chairs and file cabinets are must-haves, but there may be a few other things that can give your office a cozier, more enjoyable feel.

For example, what about a couch? The greatest thing about a home office is that it offers a sanctuary from domestic distraction, but once you leave the spell is broken. An office couch can give you a place to kick up your feet while still keeping the door closed and the world out so a work break doesn’t turn into Game Over.

Thinking along similar lines, it may also prove wise to have a mini-fridge in your home office so you can cut down on trips to the kitchen – a vortex of distraction in any home.

How do I increase my productivity with my home office?

Two things that will help a lot are comfort and good lighting.

Achieve greater comfort with an office chair that gives you support and features multiple ways to adjust it so you can find the perfect position. For your lighting, make sure you try a combination of real and artificial light, and use lamps to provide task lighting so you don’t have to keep your overhead light on all the time.

Good luck with making the most out of your home office!
