Where Should I Put My Dog Crate?

For some of those who have dogs, where to put a dog crate is going to be determined – nay, dictated – by a small living space and so this question will be a matter of wishful thinking. But, if you’ve got room to roam it’s a good idea to consider your options when deciding where to put your dog crate. As a training aid, dog crates are only as effective as how you use them and where they sit plays a big part. How Dog Crates Train Dogs A dog crate may seem like a draconian method of dog training to some, but in reality crates are a great tool for teaching canines the rules of the house. Once you get to a point where you can say, “Go to your crate!” and your dog gamely – even happily – marches in and plunks down you’ll be able to better see the advantages. It’s true that dog crates usually start off as a method of containment and a disciplinary tool, but a smart owner can train a puppy to see its crate as a place of comfort, refuge and territorial allowance. In other words, a dog can come to feel a sense of ownership for its crate – kind of like how you might feel about your Barcalounger. Why a Dog Crate’s Location Matters Puppies are adorably absentminded little things and spatial awareness does not rank high on their list of developmental priorities. That means trying to train a puppy to use a crate you’ve put in the basement isn’t really fair. Nor is it always fair to put it in the kitchen, although this is a common place for dog crates. Food and savory smells are huge distractions for new dogs and it can override their abilities to more quickly learn commands. It should be noted, though, that this can cut both ways. A dog may very well learn to better behave around food if trained in a tempting environment. A Dog Crate’s Best Location One of the coolest things about using a dog crate as a training tool is that after your dog has learned it’s his space he will follow it wherever you put it. Until then, though, the best place for it is wherever you spend the most time. That way you are in constant contact with your pooch and when you give it commands involving the crate you can show while you tell. ATGStores.com wishes you luck with your new dog and/or your new dog crate.
