What’s Door Hardware?

People who know what door hardware is probably take said knowledge for granted, but we have to assume that there are some people out there who might want to take a second look, because door hardware doesn’t really sound like what it is – kind of like dragonflies and baby’s breath.</br></br><a title="Door Hardware" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/?linkloc=tn" target="_blank">Door hardware</a> is made up of all the metal doodads that make a door look sharp and do what it needs to do. Yes, this includes the <a title="Doorknobs" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-knobs/" target="_blank">knob</a>, <a title="Door Pulls" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-pulls/" target="_blank">pull</a> or <a title="Door Handles" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/front-door-handles/" target="_blank">handle</a>, but there are less obvious examples and sometimes they, too, need upgraded or replaced.</br></br><strong>Door Hinges</strong></br></br><a title="Door Hinges" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-hinges/" target="_blank">Door hinges</a> are susceptible to a lot of wear and tear: pulling, pushing, slamming and warrantless SWAT incursions are just a few examples of things that can cause hinge damage.</br></br>Hinge quality is determined by manufacture and material, because design and function hasn’t changed for about … oh … 80,000 years, give or take a decade. How do you spot a quality hinge? Look at product reviews, of course, but also check materials: Stainless steel is always a solid choice in the hinge world.</br></br><strong>Door Stops</strong></br></br>A good <a title="Doorstops" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-stops/" target="_blank">door stop</a> should last a lifetime, but every once in a while they do need an update, even if only for decorative purposes.</br></br>Door stops come in many different varieties based on where they’re placed: the <a title="Floor Doorstops" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-stops/stop-location/floor/" target="_blank">floor</a>, on a <a title="Hinge Doorstops" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-stops/stop-location/hinge/" target="_blank">hinge</a> or on the <a title="Wall Doorstops" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-stops/stop-location/wall/" target="_blank">wall</a>. There are also variations in function. Some are <a title="Magnetic Doorstops" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-stops/type/magnetic/" target="_blank">magnetic</a> while others are <a title="Wedge Doorstops" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-stops/type/wedge/" target="_blank">wedges</a> or <a title="Rubber Doorstops" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-stops/type/rubber/" target="_blank">simple rubber stoppers</a>. They all work well; it’s just a matter of the style you prefer.</br></br><strong>Door Knockers</strong></br></br>A visitor can tell a lot by your door knocker. Design-wise, are you conservative or a little more flamboyant? Are you practical or expressive? Or, maybe you’re a hodge-podge of these traits and then some.</br></br>The good news is that it doesn’t matter, because whatever your tastes there’s a door knocker to satisfy it. Looking for a <a title="Lion's Head Door Knockers" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-knockers/animal-types/lion-heads/" target="_blank">lion’s head</a>? No problem. Want it <a title="Door Knockers " href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-knockers/features/made-in-usa/" target="_blank">made in the USA</a>? You you got it. <a title="Traditional Door Knockers" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-knockers/style/traditional/" target="_blank">Traditional</a>, <a title="Modern Door Knockers" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/door-knockers/style/modern/" target="_blank">modern</a> or somewhere in between, chances are your dream will come knocking.</br></br><strong>Doorbells</strong></br></br>Though not technically on the door, <a title="Doorbells" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/doorbells/" target="_blank">doorbells</a> still count as door hardware. It’s tricky, but it’s true – just in case you’re ever looking for doorbells and don’t know where to find them.</br></br>There are two parts to a doorbell: the outdoor <a title="Doorbell Buttons" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/doorbells/doorbell-buttons/" target="_blank">button</a> and the indoor <a title="Doorbell Chimes" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/doorbells/doorbell-chimes/" target="_blank">chime</a>. They are made to match, but there’s no rule saying you have to match them, which is why they’re often sold separately. Bonus: <a title="Wireless Doorbells" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/doorbells/doorbell-chimes/wireless/wireless/" target="_blank">Many models are wireless</a> and require no electrical work.</br></br><strong>Mail Slots</strong></br></br>Snail mail is dying, but it’s not dead yet. And besides, <a title="Mail Slots" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/mail-slots/" target="_blank">mail slots</a> are a charming solution for those who would rather not have a <a title="Mailbox" href="http://www.atgstores.com/outdoor/curb-appeal/mailboxes/?linkloc=tn" target="_blank">mailbox</a> as part of their curb appeal.</br></br>Of course, you need a door that accommodates a mail slot, so this is more of an upgrade project rather than an installation. Even so, it’s by no means an impossible DIY project.</br></br>These represent the larger categories of door hardware, but there are many more ways to enhance your entryway. <a title="Peepholes" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/peep-holes/" target="_blank">Peep holes</a>, <a title="Kickplates" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/kickplates/" target="_blank">kickplates</a>, <a title="Strike Plates" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/strike-plates/" target="_blank">strike plates</a> and <a title="Deadbolts" href="http://www.atgstores.com/hardware/door-hardware/deadbolts/" target="_blank">deadbolts</a> are other examples of door hardware that can come in as handy as the handle.
