What Would You Want on a Deserted Island?

Everybody always asks what book you would want with you on a deserted island, but what you’d probably want (after about a week, anyway) is a really great tool – any great tool. But, which one would it be? A recent news report tells the fishy story of fisherman Jose Salvador Albarengo, who was recently discovered alive near the Marshall Islands after 13 months lost at sea, some 6,000 miles away from where he first set sail on the Mexican coast. While Albarengo was not afforded the luxury of having an island to be stranded on (Tom Hanks never knew how good he had it), we can try to imagine the one thing he would’ve liked to have had with him had he washed ashore somewhere … besides a satellite phone. 1. Knife Speaking of Tom Hanks, there is a moment in Cast Away (wherein Hanks is stranded on a deserted island and is rescued many years later) after he gets home when he reflects upon his keychain pocketknife, likely thinking about how much easier his life on the island would have been with it. We can safely assume that Albarengo felt the same about not having a knife … although maybe he did. He is a fisherman, after all. 2. Ax / Hatchet If the choice is between a knife or an ax, sometimes bigger really is better. Cutting down trees – an important task in any desert-island survival experience, as many a tale has told us – is a lot harder to do with a knife than with an ax. Plus, an ax is arguably a much better weapon in the event you’re attacked by some kind of island beast or cannibal tribe. Well … you’re probably more likely to eat that ax if you get stuck on an island with a cannibal tribe, but at least you’ll go down swinging … 3. Flashlight Even assuming it was one of those fancy solar-powered flashlights, we can see how this still may not make it to the top of someone’s list. After all, the sun will always come out tomorrow (thank you, Annie). It may be foolish to squander your one wish on a thing that comes naturally. Then again, it gets really dark when there’s no artificial light at all, and it probably seems even darker when you can’t just flip a switch. Duhn-duhn-duhnnnnnn! 4. Solar-Powered Radio Oh, tempting! Very tempting! You could listen to reports about the search efforts. You’d have voices to keep you company. You might even luck out and get to hear “Margaritaville” on a no-kidding deserted island. On the other hand, you might get nothing but static. Imagine how frustrating that would be – you could’ve had an ax, but you chose a radio that doesn’t get any reception! Not a great way to start your stay in forced isolation … 5. Plastic Tarp Sometimes it’s just too easy to overlook the most basic necessities. Think about everything you could do with a sheet of plastic. It’s a poncho! It’s a roof! It’s a storage pouch! And, it can be crudely fashioned into lots of other useful things … But, it will be even less of a comfort than the ax if the cannibals come for you ... ATGStores.com wishes Mr. Albarengo a speedy return to his family and invites you to vote on which of these items you’d most like to have on your deserted island.
