What Kind of Sprinklers Are Right for Your Lawn?

Watering a lawn is a crucial part of lawn maintenance, especially during hot summers.

If you don’t have the luxury of an automatic or in-ground sprinkler system, there are a few different irrigation options you can use to help keep your grass looking lush and green. Hose-attached sprinklers and sprinkler heads can be placed anywhere in the yard that may need a bit of moisture.

Check out the options below to find out what makes them different.

Stationary Sprayers

A stationary sprayer is the most basic of lawn sprinklers, constructed of a solid base and perforated spray tube that shoots water in every direction.

Sprayers come in various shapes that can provide different spray patterns to suit specific lawn shapes. While they usually don’t have a very wide reach, stationary sprinklers can be very effective for smaller spaces, and a gentle watering option for delicate flowers or plants.

Oscillating Sprinklers

Oscillating sprinklers also have a stationary base, but feature a rotating spray tube that moves back and forth to provide more coverage.

These sprinklers can water up to 4,000 square feet depending on the specific model and are great for bigger yards. Plus, they have the added benefit of being really fun for kids and pets to play in.

Rotary Sprinklers

The rotary sprinkler is an interesting irrigation option that quickly spins around to evenly fling water across a wide area. These are suitable for large or midsize lawns, as their spray can have a range of up to 25 feet from the base.

Pulsating Sprinklers

Pulsating sprinklers are the iconic sprinkler design that inspired one of the corniest dance moves known to man. Even so, they still do a pretty good job of providing even water distribution.

Like the rotary sprinkler, they uniformly water an area around the base, but the pulsating sprinkler head makes for a lighter spray that can be suitable for delicate plants.

With these options in mind you can then consider the size, shape and water needs of your lawn to decide which type of sprinkler is perfect for your yard. Once you purchase your sprinklers, water your grass twice a week (preferably in the early morning or late afternoon for the best water absorption) and you’ll be well on your way to an enviably green lawn!
