Top 4 FREE Design Apps for 2013

The Internet has stiffened competition for designers and, admittedly, we are not helping by reviewing our picks for the Top 4 free home design apps for 2013 – but there’s no fighting the future when it comes to this whiz-bang kind of stuff. The good news is that many of these apps are designed for use by designers. The bad news, of course, is that now designers will have to up their game in the battle with phone robots for industry domination. So, with a quick apology and no further ado let’s take a look at which apps are making things easier and cheaper in the world of design.

1. PaletteApp

Although this list isn’t ranked, PaletteApp is far and away the most powerful and promising of the free apps featured here. Users can search and sort through hundreds of thousands of products (e.g., flooring, textiles, fixtures and paints) from name-brand manufacturers and then combine them in visual palettes to greatly enhance the design selection process.

2. ColorSnap Studio

This Sherman-Williams app features more than 1,500 colors and the ability to pair your personal photos with complementary hues. A few people have complained in the past that some colors are “off,” but the latest update introduced even better color rendition – which was pretty good the first time around for a free app.

3. iGranite

It’s a mystery why this app is called iGranite, because it does so much more than show you rocks. The program allows you to upload a photo of whatever space you want to redesign and then apply new texture and color finishes to walls, countertops and the floor. Once you’ve virtually remodeled the space you can even share it with friends and family via the app.

4. My Measures & Dimensions (FREE as of 2/7/2013)

This app was originally marketed at $2.99, but can be downloaded for free now – presumably for a limited time only. My Measures allows you to add measurement lines and angles to your photos and then save the images so you always have the dimensions on hand. It’s very simple to use and comes with many intuitive features that make design and planning much easier. ATGStores.com hopes these apps help you get more out of your design project and welcomes you to offer suggestions about your favorite design apps.
