Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions: 2014
It’s that time of year again: A time to gorge on the fruits of the past year, to make solemn promises to ourselves that this is the last time for such gorging (pinky swear!) and then watch as the self-deception fades away to nothing within less than two weeks.
Ah, New Year’s! A new beginning is upon us, and not a moment too soon!
But, what shall we give up? What will be the vice vanquished by the virtue of a fresh start? Here are the Top 10 resolutions for 2014 (some of which you’ll probably recognize from last year):
<strong>1. Lose Weight / Exercise</strong>
It wins every year! A quick peek into any local fitness club in January would seem to confirm the steadfastness of those healthy convictions, but if you prefer cobwebs to crowds you can just wait until February to start your membership.
<strong>2. Save Money</strong>
Nothing comes more naturally than the resolution to save money after you’ve blown nearly all of it in the previous week. So-called “financial planners” are lining up as we speak to convince you that they’re smarter than the talking baby on TV.
<strong>3. Make Money</strong>
You gotta holla for that dolla, as the kids say these days, and 2014 is as good a year as any to turn the volume up on your caterwauling. Just remember not to scream directly at the interviewer or higher-up in charge of the gold paving bricks.
You’ve always wanted to bask in the sun in Belize and this is going to be your year. Of course, if you’re too busy with Resolution #3 you can always set your sights a little closer to home. A new place is a new place no matter the zip code.
<strong>5. Family Time</strong>
Bringing back the family dinner is on a lot of resolution lists this year – as well it should be! Never mind that it shouldn’t take a resolution to get everyone together; we shall also resolve to not bring up that part of the deal.
<strong>6. Technology Timeouts</strong>
A lot of people out there are starting to get that creeping feeling that they’re smartphones are leading them by their noses. Well, it’s no illusion. Technology has us all by the short hairs and a resolution to put down the glowing screen more often is a noble proposal.
<strong>7. Go Green</strong>
Saving the planet is a big goal for 2014. More public transportation and putting out the recycling may be the norm for the dedicated eco-warriors among us, but for newbies these are worthwhile baby steps.
<strong>8. Learn Something New</strong>
Why is it so hard to set aside a few minutes every day to practice a new skill? The mystery will plague many as they vow to take up an instrument, go to a dance class and finally learn how to bake a cake without the help of canned frosting.
Paying it forward in 2014 is a fantastic idea. For all of those who have resolved to be more charitable, we have no jokes – just well wishes …
<strong>10. Be Nice</strong>
… but for the rest of us who have bottomed out, we’ll be limping into the new year with a promise to try and smile a bit more, and be a little more understanding when things don't go as we planned.
