For those who don’t have them, thin walls are nothing more than a plot trigger in bad movies that lead to romance or crime (or both), but a lot of us in real life know the struggle is real – thin walls are a burden to be managed … but how?
You’d think there would be a legal remedy for thin walls, and there is, but it’s tricky. Every homeowner and tenant is afforded the right of the “quiet enjoyment” of their property, and sellers and landlords are required to disclose thin walls in a residence before you take possession.
But, what if they’ve got their legal bases covered, and you’ve still got a neighbor with a Bichon Frise that just won't quit? Here are a few ideas:
How many tapestries does it take to cancel out the neighbor’s dog? Probably too many, but if the disturbance is localized it can help to hang a tapestry in that specific area.
TIP: Check a tapestry’s thickness and textile type before you buy. For max effect, look for quilt-type tapestries that have a layer of fill sewn inside them.
Plants / Planters
Plants don’t really diffuse or dampen sound, but they can create a greater feeling of closeness in a room, which can in turn increase your sense of privacy and calmness.
TIP: Cluster planters together in places where they’re more often in your field of vision to amplify their peaceful presence.
Again, it’s all about the padding. A rug isn’t going to mute the source, but it can help absorb the reverberation and cancel out the way sound travels through your space, especially if you have hardwood floors.
TIP: Look for a thick rug made of something soft and cushy, like wool or cotton.
BONUS: Surround Sound
We’re not suggesting you fight fire with fire, but when it comes to thin walls you can’t always hope that meditation and inner calm will win the day.
TIP: Speaker loudness isn’t as important as speaker placement when it comes to battling your neighbor’s never-ending Battle of the Bands. If things are really bad, consider consulting a home audio specialist to achieve the best sound cancellation.
Good luck with your search for a more serene space!
