The Art on Your Sleeve

What we hang on our walls tells a story. Sometimes the story is nostalgic, sometimes it's hopeful, and sometimes it's an escape into another world (where we may very well live like kings and queens). Any armchair psychologist can deconstruct a person based on the art they display, but that doesn't mean the exercise lacks sentimentality or amusement. The Romantic Who Once Backpacked Europe Steeped in nostalgia and longing for that lost summer day when they climbed the stairs of La Basilique du Sacré Coeur de Montmartre (the only way to speak of such a hallowed place), romantics pine for the day they quit their jobs in a dramatic display of moral conviction and catch the next plane to Paris. It is there that they will fall in love over chocolate croissants and lattes and learn to truly carpe diem. Their way of preserving the moment in time is to celebrate the memory daily with black-and-white images of nondescript alleyway cafés and vintage posters advertising obscure Parisian wines. It certainly rolls off the tongue nicely, but sometimes that's the only easy thing about the idea. The dance lover enjoys a festive and kinetic atmosphere, and has maybe even taken some dance classes, but feels that the real passion is in the art of it. "Dance lovers" come in all varieties, from sports enthusiasts to jet pilots, and enjoy being surrounded by images that inspire graceful energy and movement, even if no amount of inspiration in the world will get them on the dance floor. Children are (most obviously) stimulated by visual objects and imagery, and are known to form what could be called "opinions" about it at a very early age. Of course, if you hear the phrase, "I find baroque artwork very tedious," come out of your 5-year-old's mouth you can assume you've got either a very awesome or very scary situation on your hands, but otherwise you can rest assured that the tyke's tastes are pretty wide open. They thrive in an orderly environment and love the rule of thirds. They measure twice and cut once, keep things tidy and find beauty in simple, natural things. The art in their homes has clean lines and patterns that celebrate the mathematical symmetry found in nature. Oh yeah, and it can also drive everyone else in the house crazy. You know these people. Your Aunt Millie loves cow stuff. She's got cow paintings and cow statuary, but she's also got cow-themed oven mitts and cow-print placemats. Uncle Melvin, on the other hand, loves animal prints of all kinds - as long as they're pastels. [caption id="attachment_4032" align="aligncenter" width="200"] "Feed me, Melvin."[/caption] Naturally, there's no end to people's tastes in art and we at ATGStores.com think that's a very, very good thing.
