Start Your Own Home Library

There are a lot of things to miss about the good old days, when books were more a part of our lives: the feel and sound of the pages as you turn them, the smell of old paper … the simple beauty of a book! And, it’s this last that is what’s really lost in the Digital Age. We still have books (thank goodness), but they’re just a collection of bits and bytes stored on hard drives, rather than a colorful assortment of art stored on shelves. A Clever Display The upside is that we’re burning through fewer trees for pulp and creating less waste, but it comes at the cost of putting our intellectual interests on display for others to peruse and perhaps borrow. A book collection is more than just a stack of dusty tomes – it’s a tribute to good taste … or at least the presence of taste. As a décor item, a bookcase is about as clever as it gets. Books are indeed very pretty, but they also speak to the browser about the kinds of thoughts and ideas that are being shared in the space. It lets people know that the pursuit of knowledge is afoot in the house. A Conversation Starter It’s hard to talk about a book you can’t see or pick up, especially when you’re just idling in someone’s living room. Somehow, leafing through the pages as someone gives you an outline of the story inside gives the explanation and discussion more immediacy. Likewise, it takes more of a random act of interest to start a conversation about an e-book unless it’s initiated by the reader. And, where does a conversation like that go, when there's nothing of substance to give it weight? “So, I’m reading War and Peace. It’s amazing. Download it sometime!” Congratulations, e-book guy. You just made Tolstoy even more intellectually inaccessible. A Classy Look Finally, beyond the brainy ballyhoo – books just look cool. They’re little pieces of art with stories inside. They carry emotional weight. Some of them have helped make the world a better place. And, that’s worth celebrating. Plus … now that paper books have fallen out of favor among the next generation’s digerati it means you can literally buy them by the barrel. ATGStores.com wishes you luck starting your own home library and hopes it will start as many stories as it holds.
