Short, tall, skinny, squat – couch legs come in all shapes and sizes, which seems kind of odd when you think about sofas and how people usually use them, but there’s no arguing that they can add a lot of character to your run-of-the-mill Chesterfield.
(That is, if Chesterfields were run of the mill, which they most certainly are not.)
But, is it really the legs that make those and other stylish sofa designs so sexy? Maybe, but you definitely want to choose wisely when it comes to sofa support. A few questions you should ask:
Are they stable?
Of course, this is one of the most important things to note in a couch leg. A wobbly couch is simply a ridiculous piece of furniture, and of no use to anyone.
And, wobbly couches do exist. It happens when the legs are mismatched or of differing lengths, and if you find yourself shimming your couch you’re not going to be happy about it.
Are they durable?
Even the most elegant couch legs should be tough and able to withstand some punishment. The connections need to be tight, using long hanger bolts that screw snugly into sturdy top plates.
Hardware aside, the material should also be durable. It’s tempting to skimp when it comes to couch legs, especially if they’re hidden behind a skirt. Get a good look and ask questions – find out what kind of material is used and how.
Can they be easily replaced?
If worse comes to worst, can your couch legs be replaced? Couch legs can be a lot like cars in this regard: The fancier they are, the harder they are to fix.
But, that’s not always the case. Furniture makers often have these kinds of “spare parts” available for when accidents occur, and you can also find replacement legs online.
Remember to ask yourself these questions before your next sofa purchase and you'll definitely get a leg up in your selection.
