Searching for the Most Comfortable Bar Stools

For those who have had some experience sitting in bars, they know that it’s a rare thing to sit at a bar and actually say, “Wow. This is a really comfortable bar stool!”

And, there are lots of reasons why comfortable bar stools are so elusive. Very rarely is it an accident of design, either in the bar stool or in the bar.

Reason #1: Bartenders don’t really like you.

This is an unalienable truth as old as glaciers. Bartenders may love their craft and they most certainly love booze, but they do not love you. They want you to order small, tip big and vacate your bar stool as soon as possible. No bartender ever wants you to loiter at the bar, impeding traffic and making small talk while not ordering things.

The only exception to this is if you’re an established regular with a steady job. Think of “Norm” on Cheers but, you know, without a massive unpaid tab.

Reason #2: Bar owners want turnover.

This fact is based on what’s known as the law of diminishing returns. It means something slightly different in economics, but as it pertains to you while camped in a bar stool it means that the longer you sit there the less you will spend over time.

When bar stools are too comfortable it encourages patrons to idle and that’s not good for business because, as a general rule, the newer customer is ready to flush the bank faster than the one who’s been sitting there for an hour nursing a warm beer.

Reason #3: Comfort takes up more space.

Bar stools with backrests, arms and sweet swivel functions require more room and are therefore not always the profit-minded bar owner's first choice. Fewer bar stools means fewer customers at the bar and that's no good. Yes, at first blush this seems to contradict the Turnover Rule, but in fact these two rules can and do coexist without conflict. More bar stools is always better than fewer bar stools no matter what.

Reason #4: Comfortable bar stools can be expensive.

This isn’t always the case, of course, but a bar owner focused more on turnover than your comfort isn’t going to care. The major concern is the price-to-durability ratio, which often results in a tough bar stool that will give a beating as thorough as the one it takes.

Fortunately, you don’t have to make such backside-bruising calculations when choosing the best bar stools for your home, which makes the odds pretty good that the most comfortable bar stool you’ll ever find won’t be at your local bar.
