How long has it been since you’ve been on a picnic? Picnicking is such a simple (and inexpensive) pastime it’s a wonder everyone isn’t doing it all the time, but for whatever reason we’d rather pay to sit elbow-to-elbow with strangers in a restaurant.
Well … at least we think that’s what we want. But, now it’s summertime, there are plenty of public spaces (thanks, taxpayers!) and chairs are a luxury we can forgo at least once in a while so that we may commune within nature – to put it most flowerily. So, here’s what you’ll need:
Yep. This is what’s gonna make you okay with not having a chair. Of course, the better angels among us will be just as happy with sparkling cider and the like, but the point remains the same – don’t forget the beverages.
A picnic without food and only wine is called “vagrancy.” It might not be fair, but those are the rules. So, you’ll also want to bring along some snacks. A selection of charcuterie, cheeses, breads, crackers and spreads can do nicely, or you can indulge in a little slice of Americana with sandwiches, slaw and chips.
Picnic Basket (and Utensils)
We know what you’ve got pictured in your mind – the type of basket Yogi Bear uses when he goes picnicking, or maybe the one Little Red Riding Hood took to grandma’s house. Those are indeed very awesome, but then again, so is this:

In other words, you have lots of options when it comes to picnic baskets and supplies. You can wrap your food in cheesecloth and sip your reds warm, like they make you do in France, or you can take advantage of all the newfangled picnic technology. It's up to you.
Red-checked and ready to go, the picnic blanket is a must. Of course, the pattern really doesn’t matter, but it should be big enough – and soft enough – so that everyone in attendance has a little corner of comfort.
