National Pet Month: Why You Need a Pet

May is National Pet Month and since the reason for the season is to promote pet ownership, we thought we’d trade in all the adorable kitten and puppy memes for a list of reasons why you should go out and get a pet RIGHT NOW.

After all, the Internet is already bursting with cute animal pics, and as adorable as they may be (see above) they’re not a substitute for the real thing. Here are just a few reasons why this year’s National Pet Month should be your cue to get a cutie:

1. Owning a pet is good for your health.

Science says so, but if you need proof you can read this well-cited article published by Michigan State University.

To sum up said article, pets improve your mood, which in turn improves your health. Humans actually feel love for pets, and new studies show that some pets even love you back, and we all know love is super healthy.

2. Sometimes animals need rescuing, too.

National Pet Month is all about promoting pet ownership, and supporting pet adoption is a big part of that. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that more than 5 million animals enter shelters every year.

Of those animals, about half get adopted. It’s fair to hope that we can do better, both with adoption and pet population management.

5. Your selfies will improve by approximately 124 percent.

It’s a statistical fact. You might be cute, but you plus an adorable new pet is way cuter.

So, celebrate National Pet Month by going out getting a new best friend; it’s totally worth it, for these reasons and so many more.
