The real question is whether it deserves to be pulled off at all. Monochrome Defined Generally speaking, “monochrome” refers to the use of black and white gradients only, whether in a photo, a painting or a room’s décor. Gaining in popularity over time, expression in monochrome became a common theme in contemporary art throughout the 20th century and into the current age. Monochrome Home Décor Monochrome interior design schemes have a reputation for being contemporary in character, sometimes to a degree of being cold and futuristic. This is what happens when influential people in the design community spend millions outfitting their homes in chrome, glass and white alpaca rugs. But, that doesn’t make it impossible to use monochrome in ways that are warmer and more inviting. Draping a room entirely in black and white might make you feel like you’re living in the middle of an inkblot test, but channeling a little Andy Warhol could add some spice to any décor space. Monochrome Décor Ideas Black and white photography / art: Art is an easy way to bring monochrome accents into your home and blend it with existing décor without creating an overbearing impression of avant-garde sterility. Rugs: Black-and-white or color-monochrome rugs are a great way to add balance to other colors in the room without being too distracting, because it’s on the floor and so won’t conflict with eye-level line-of-sight color schemes. Furniture: Decorating with monochrome furniture is a solid commitment to the style.
