Keeping Pets Safe Outdoors

It’s summertime, and that means it’s even more fun than usual to take your pet out on the leash and into the world, but how do you keep them safe out among the masses? If you have a yard or happen to live in the country, then you’ve really lucked out when it comes to pet playtime. There are usually plenty of places for Felix and Fido to scamper without fear of traffic or tangling with other pets, but even so there are still some common tips that can keep Town Terrier and Country Cat out of trouble. Leashes & Carriers No one wants to rain on the Freedom Parade, but even the most well-trained pets should be on a leash or in a carrier when taken outside in high-traffic areas – especially if you’re going near a park or playground. Kids often find animals irresistible, and with one excitable nip you can find yourself in some hot water. Plus, loud noises and the presence of other animals can make pets skittish. Your dog might have the discipline of a canine ninja … until that squirrel bolts in front of him and he instantly forgets everything he knows. The point is, you just never know and it’s better to rein them in a little than to have to scrape them off the road. Fleas & Ticks The world (and your neighbor’s filthy hound, no doubt) is crawling with bloodsucking vermin and prevention is always the best bet when it comes to fleas and ticks. It’s more than a little unsettling to find a lump on your pet and then dig down through the fur to discover a big, fat tick gorging itself on the blood of the innocent … Gross. So, minimize the possibility by shampooing your pets with formulas that help ward off pests and provide them with flea and tick treatment prior to outside adventuring. Hot & Dry Your pets will need lots of water on hot days, especially if they’re running all over hell’s half-acre in a fit of tongue-wagging joy. That doesn’t mean you need to carry a water dish and an extra bottle of Evian with you, but if you’re going to be out for the day you should know a few places along the way where your pet can wet its whistle. And, this should go without saying, but just in case you haven’t heard: Never leave your pet in the car for any extended period of time. They reserve a special place for people who do this on hot days, and it’s called jail. ATGStores.com hopes you have lots of happy, healthy outdoor fun with your pets this summer.
