Katja O’Brien: Tween Room Design & Décor, Part 2

Yesterday, we sat down with Decorist Classic Designer Katja O’Brien to talk about her ideas for how to update a bedroom for tweens, and we started the discussion with statement pieces like the bed, bedding and area rug.

Today, we’re going to talk about what else we can add to bring a tween room to life while also keeping the design nimble enough to accommodate a tween’s shifting styles, as Katja did for the Seattle Showhouse girl's bedroom (pictured above).

James: So, yesterday you talked about the bed as an anchor to the room design, and the importance of color lending cohesion to the overall look of the space. How can we add color while still keeping things versatile?

Katja: Accessories and artwork are great ways to add color, and reflect interests and passions at budget-friendly prices. When your child grows older and tastes evolve, you can trade these pieces for an updated look.

Also, for a pop of “wow,” wallpaper adds design and creates a truly signature space. Select one focal wall in the room and add wallpaper instead of just paint.

James: What about furniture? I think it would be hard for me to choose tween furniture because they just grow out of it. Literally.

Katja: Ottomans and benches are great, versatile pieces to add to a room. Not only do they add color and design, but they can serve as extra seating for friends, or storage for seasonal clothes and blankets if your space is limited.

Finally, a modern desk and chair can create an inspired spot to study. Add a colorful, comfortable chair, and blend in warm woods to keep the space feeling welcoming.

James: These are all great ideas, and it’s awesome to see how you brought them to life in the Seattle Showhouse. Thank you for your time, and for your design!

Katja: You’re welcome!

James: Check out Ms. O’Brien’s designs in the Seattle Showhouse, and keep her and Decorist in mind for your next interior design project.
