Earlier this year, ATGStores.com unveiled the Seattle Showhouse, a luxury home redesigned entirely online by a host of celebrity interior designers. The results were impressive, and we wanted to know more about the process.
James: You and your firm designed the family room in the Seattle Showhouse, which is pictured above. Can you give us an idea about how your design concepts can work well for any space?
Julie: Design with flexibility in mind – side tables that are sturdy enough to serve as extra seats (ceramic or wood garden stools are great for this), ottomans that can be pulled up as extra game playing space … even a bookshelf or etagere that can serve as a drop spot for weekly homework still looks nice when it’s accessorized and can be very functional, especially when extra space is needed.
James: Summer is fast approaching. What do you say to folks who might want to update their interior design with the start of a new season in mind?
Julie: Don’t be afraid to use a mix of fabrics that are different “seasons” – we love summery outdoor fabrics on sofas (especially if they are lighter colored) in the same room as wooly textures (think chunky wool for poufs or even chairs).
James: We’re seeing lots of features and articles on layering rugs. Is that something you do?
Julie: This is one of our favorite ways to punch up color in a room. You may already own a large, neutral carpet (such as jute, sisal or even a very flat wool carpet) and if you’re craving a different feeling in the space, find a rug at least as wide or slightly wider than the width of your sofa and place it so it is centered in the space – it cozies up the space with the extra layer!
James: What say you about art?
Julie: Buy whatever art you love! We don’t feel art has to match your space – if you love a piece, buy it and it will always find a home in your home.
James: If someone wanted to make a big impact without a complete furniture or lighting upgrade, what would you suggest?
Julie: Wallpaper! Hands down, one of our favorite ways to take a space to the next level is a textured or patterned wallpaper. We always love using grasscloth; it is an INSTANT way to add depth and warmth to any space, but it’s one area where we always recommend hiring a professional to install!
James: These are really great ideas. Thank you so much for giving us your time.
Julie: You’re welcome!
