Interior Design: Simple vs. Dramatic

Many interior designers will remark that design and décor should reflect your personality, and it’s hard to argue with that, but the trick is that our personalities are multifaceted and subject to change at a moment’s notice.

So, how do we decorate our homes in ways that really say who we are?

Simple Décor Schemes

“Tabula rasa” – it’s a Latin phrase that translates to “blank slate” and is a fancy way to describe how you can use simple décor to maintain flexibility in your home’s look and feel.

It would be easy to write it off as a minimalist approach, but there’s a lot more to this décor philosophy than just keeping a room empty. With a plan that allows for change, you can create a look that more readily adapts to your whims and lifestyle.

So, what helps make up a “simple” décor scheme?

- white / neutral tones for walls and large furniture items
- a lack of knickknacks
- clean furniture styles with little ornamentation
- recessed lighting

This is your blank slate, and when you add even a hint of color or eclectic décor it will pop in the space. It gives you the power to emphasize what really matters – family photography, art or souvenirs from your travels.

Dramatic Décor Schemes

Drama is hard to define in décor, but we all know when we see it – it’s a space that takes our breath away.

The key, of course, is making sure it does so in a good way, and that your personality isn’t lost in a cyclone of random stuff.

So, what helps make up a “dramatic” décor scheme?

- bold décor with history and character
- oversized wall art
- plush, ornate furniture
- statement lighting

This is good drama; a collection of memories that adds up to a style as unique as you and your life experiences.
