How to Size Online Purchases
It should go without saying that it’s very important to note the dimensions of things you buy online, but it’s very easy to get tripped up by the numbers. We transpose them, forget them or simply ignore them and insert the size we feel a thing should be.
This happens all the time and will continue to happen because that’s how we’re wired. Our brains are geared to make quick calculations that involve glazing over details when the answer appears obvious. David Copperfield made truckloads of cash by relying on this single human trait.
(DISCLAIMER: This is not about sizing online <em>clothing</em> purchases – consult your nearest crystal ball to figure that one out.)
<strong>Measure Twice, Buy Once </strong>
So, how do we slow down and make sure the <a title="Sofas" href="http://www.atgstores.com/sofas_1003.html" target="_blank">couch</a> we’re buying online will fit through the front door? Yep – we measure the door. But, we shouldn’t stop there.
We should also measure the space in which we plan to place the item we’re buying. This is especially true for big purchases. Some of the time we save shopping online should be invested in measuring … everything. Measure the floor space, the distances between entryways and the ceiling height, and double check that against the size of the purchase.
<strong>Paper Cutouts </strong><strong> </strong>
Now, here’s how you can really get a good idea of how things will look with your new purchase in place. To start, grab these items:
<li>Pen / Marker</li>
First, tape the unfolded newspapers together in the general size (surface area) of the thing you’re buying. Next, measure the newspapers and mark off the exact dimensions with your pen. Now, cut the newspaper – you should then have a cutout that approximates the space your purchase will take up.
Once you have it you can lay it out on the floor (or tape it to the wall) in the areas you’d like to place your new couch/<a title="Tables" href="http://www.atgstores.com/living-room-tables_1005.html" target="_blank">table</a>/<a title="Wall Art" href="http://www.atgstores.com/wall-art_649.html?linkloc=topnav" target="_blank">painting</a>/<a title="Entertainment Centers" href="http://www.atgstores.com/entertainment-centers_1077.html" target="_blank">entertainment center</a>, etc., to see where it will look and fit the best.
Of course, you don’t have to use newspapers. You can arrange other objects to approximate the space, use string or even just mark off the corners at the right length and width with cups or other small items – whatever allows you to visualize the dimensions of the thing you’re buying.
