How to Optimize Office Desk Space

Getting the most out of our office desks isn’t something most of us plan; we sit down to work and let the chips fall where they may – usually in the keyboard, where all the canned air in the world can’t get them out.

There’s plenty of science to suggest that a clean, ordered space can lead to more efficient work, which would then hopefully lead to more free time away from your desk. So, at least in one way, we all have a vested interest in optimizing office desk space.

Here are some simple steps you can take to make your workspace work for you:

Go wireless.

You’re probably not going to spring for a wireless work phone, but you can easily make your desk more manageable with a wireless mouse and keyboard.

It’d be nice if companies provided this option free of charge, but even if they don’t it might be worth it for you to invest. On the budget end, you can get both for around $30 – a small price to pay for so much added comfort.

Go paperless.

It seems amazing that file cabinets are still a thing, save for storing documents that need a physical signature. Look at your desk: Are there any papers on it? But, for every scrap of paper you need, there are probably four you don’t.

Throw ‘em out and make room for more important things.

Get more storage.

For those items that can’t be recycled, there’re all kinds of clever storage options you can try.

Elevate your monitor for storage underneath, get hooks and pins for cubby walls, use holders for pens, clips and scissors – there are endless combinations. Just make sure your new office storage doesn’t trick you into getting more stuff, that then needs more storage, that …

Give yourself a hand.

You're in charge of your office desk; not the other way around. That means, you should orient your desk according to your dominant hand and motions.

If you're left-handed and you prefer to use your phone with that hand, you can increase efficiency by placing the phone at your left so you don't have to reach across the keyboard to answer or dial out.

The same is true of any item you use with frequency. Keep them close at hand, literally, and you'll spend less time locating and using them, which should give you more time to do other things – like go home early.
