How to Improve Kitchen Economy

The economy may be looking a shade better than it did a few years ago, but efficiency is still the watchword of the day in many households and nowhere does it help more than in the kitchen.

Ergonomics – the study of healthy efficiency in the workplace – is typically not applied to the home kitchen, but it should be. There are a number of ways you can improve your kitchen workspace without a huge investment that will make life (and cooking) a whole lot easier.

1. Store heavy things in floor-level cabinets.

Crockpots, glass and ceramic dishes, infrequently used small appliances and other heavy items should be stored lower rather than higher so you a) can use your legs to lift them up to counter level and b) don’t have to lift them way up when you need to put them away.

2. Keep knives sharp and handy.

A sharp knife will shave countless minutes off of cooking prep time (pun intended) as well as keep you safer. Ironically, sharp knives are safer than dull knives because they do what you expect them to do and you don’t have to push and pull erratically to get the job done.

3. Store terrycloth towels under the sink.

You can rack up the dollars on decorative doilies and paper towels, but consider storing a stack of terrycloth towels under the sink or in a drawer. You can buy them in the automotive department for pennies a pound and just chuck them in the dirty laundry for reuse after you clean up a spill.

4. Think about cabinet organization.

In real life, many kitchen cabinets are of the full-to-bursting variety with things packed so tight they come spilling out every time we open them up. Base cabinet organizers, door-mounted organizers and in-cabinet Lazy Susans can help keep things in their place.

5. Remember that it’s a kitchen.

At the end of the day, a good kitchen is a kitchen well-lived in. You’re not feeding Patton’s Third Army, although some days it probably feels like you are. When you do what feels comfortable everything comes a little easier and remembering that every little spot doesn’t need cleaned up RIGHT NOW may help you relax.

ATGStores.com hopes these tips create a better, more livable kitchen experience.
