How to Choose the Most Comfortable Chair Ever

The tricky thing about choosing the most comfortable chair in the world – or any type of perfect furniture, really – is understanding that it’s not about the furniture at all. It’s about you.

That’s how they fool you with fancy fabrics, far-out functions and flashy fluff that always costs too much money. The furniture folks are trying to convince you that, yes, a lot of thought has gone into this chair design! And, the price is a bargain compared to the millions of research dollars spent to create it! And so on.

And, it’s probably all true, but it still might not be the perfect chair for you. Ask yourself these six questions before you buy your next chair to get closer to perfection.

What are you going to be doing in this chair?

This is probably the most importance question you must ask: What are you going to be doing when you’re sitting in that chair? Maybe it’s reading, eating, watching TV, sleeping, conversing … or a combination of t hings. We use chairs in lots of different ways, and some of them are very specific.

How you use a chair has a huge impact on what it's ideal shape, feel and size may be.

What is your body type?

That’s a rhetorical question, of course. You alone know your type and how that applies to your comfort while you’re lounging, eating, napping, etc. This is important, because a chair may look great, but it might not feel great to you and that’s something you want to avoid.

And, this goes beyond weight. Maybe you’re really tall, or really short. Maybe you have pain in your legs that’s alleviated when they’re elevated. Keep these factors in mind when you’re looking for your perfect chair.

How’s your back feeling these days?

A lot of chairs just ask too much from your back. Some are too soft and you slump. Others are too rigid and you can’t relax. Everybody knows what it’s like to sit in a chair that feels as if it was designed by a dungeon master.

The thing to remember, though, is that the right chair should be comfortable without exacerbating whatever back problem you might have. It doesn’t have to be therapeutic, but it also shouldn't be giving you a side of scoliosis with your serving of comfort.

How much space do you have?

Comfort and ambience go hand in hand, and if your chair is making you feel cramped it’s going to have a negative impact on the whole experience. Dining chairs and TV chairs are especially susceptible to this problem.

Of course, it’s also a good idea to know your space so you don’t select something too small. When it comes to chairs, you definitely want the right size for the space.

What feels most comfortable on your skin?

This isn’t going to matter so much if you’re in the market for a wooden chair, but this is a huge deal if you’re looking for something upholstered.

Anyone’s who has ever sat on a leather couch on a hot day in shorts knows what this is all about. You definitely need to pay attention to fabric choices when it comes to finding your new favorite place to relax.

Ask yourself these six questions and you’re bound to end up with a better chair that more perfectly suits your needs. Good luck!
