How to Add Comfy Seating to Any Room

What if a bar stool was just a stool – would it mean we would no longer need the justification of a bar counter or island? Would it pave the way for freestanding stools in the kitchen for people to sit while chatting with the cook? Or in the living room, even? Or, what if more furniture had wheels? Are things like portability and mobility really that déclassé, or have we let glossy design magazines skew our perception of reality? The American Dream isn’t dead – as long as your guests have a place to sit. The news abounds with tales of how the economy is impacting how we live – particularly when it comes to the housing market. While economists may agree the crisis is over, new college grads, the underemployed and everyday folks the big banks burned are trying to figure out how to make do with less space as housing affordability spins out of control. For renters (or really anyone facing a lack of elbow room), that means finding new ways to make the most of smaller living spaces – and one way to do that is by having a plan for comfy seating all the time, anytime. Ample, comfy seating will convey a sense of ownership in your space, no matter its size. It doesn’t take a sociologist to tell you that humans are communal creatures (but if it helps you can read more here), and so it stands to reason that if you can’t build and enjoy that community in your home it’s never going to feel very homey to you. Have you ever wanted to host a gathering, but decided not to go through with it because you didn’t know where people were going to sit? It’s no fun. So, instead: Consider seating that is: affordable, stackable, multifunctional, storable and durable. There are a variety of seating options that fall on the conservative end of the furniture spectrum that are still fun, comfy and convenient. The key is to not be afraid to allow for a little eclectic mixing and matching to accommodate spaces that present what we’ll generously call “alternative seating opportunities.” Good luck at your next gathering!
