How Spherical Shapes Shake Up Interior Design

Why is everything so square? Buildings, boxes, beds and bookcases – sometimes there are just too many right angles in this world, and that’s one thing that makes spherical design so appealing.

And, while it may be the juxtaposition that makes spheres so sexy, it’s not the only thing about them that make us circle back for another look.

We’re drawn to organic shapes.

Mother Nature’s not a big fan of straight lines. She draws in majestic arabesques, cutie-pie curlicues and angry, jagged fractures that remind us the most wondrous things on Earth are not made by human hands.

And, spherical shapes make up a familiar part of that landscape, from the ripples made by raindrops to the raindrops themselves and the puffy clouds that deliver them.

Spheres are an intimate part of humanity.

Our ancestors have passed down their reverence for the sun and moon, and their shapes have influenced our art and culture over the intervening centuries. Celestial objects provide light and life, while their spherical atomic counterparts make both possible – it’s no wonder circles mean so much to us.

But, that’s not all. We are drawn to the eye as our window on the world, and when we want to make a connection with someone that’s where we look. It’s a daily reminder, however subtle, of how important this shape is in our lives.

Blah, blah, blah – straight lines are boring.

This is the meat of the matter in design, generally, and specifically in interior design. Spheres are a beautiful way to throw a curveball (heh heh) into an otherwise angular design plan.

There are a lot of ways you can go about it, too. Spherical lighting fixtures and décor are almost always a good bet, but you can take things further with art, tables and furniture that feature circular patterns and shapes.

Don’t be afraid to round out your style with spherical design!
