How Often Should I Clean X?

No, this isn’t a how-to on cleaning the letter X (although it probably could use some reputation management), but rather a handy guide on how to keep your house clean without thinking about it so much. Whether we like it or not – or even pay attention to it – we live our lives by the clock. There are only so many hours in a day, and after you subtract time for work, sleep and daydreaming about cookie-dough ice cream, that leaves us with about 46 minutes to get any chores done. If you’re not careful, those precious minutes can be frittered away on things like Seinfeld reruns. Try keeping these temptations at bay by making a cleaning calendar. It’s easy to do and will help you save time – which you can then spend gorging on frozen treats and syndicated television. (NOTE: All times assume average, everyday use.) 1. How often should I clean my oven? Let’s ignore the “self-cleaning” oven marketing – that path can lead to a broken oven and you’ll always be the one who extracts whatever’s left, anyway, whether you decide to scrub or burn off whatever’s in there. FREQUENCY: If you rent, the answer is when you move out. For everyone else, an annual on-your-hands-and-knees char battle is sufficient. 2. How often should I clean my windows? Cleaning windows is a pain and the grime is often unnoticeable unless the bird had blackberries for lunch, which means windows get neglected. FREQUENCY: Try once a month and use these tips to make quick work of it. 3. How often should I dust? Ah, dusting – the easiest chore to skip, until you realize you can leave yourself notes without need of pen or paper. FREQUENCY: Once a week is excellent when there's no worry of allergies (especially for your electronics). 4. How often should I clean my toilet? This is another chore that can be easy to ignore unless something catastrophic happens. Unfortunately, it’s also the kind of yuck that builds up while you’re not watching – because staring into toilets isn’t cool. FREQUENCY: Use the brush once a week and, as we’ve mentioned before, be wary of toilet tablets and overuse of bleach. 5. How often should I clean my bath/shower? Timing this one right is hard, if only because it should be getting cleaner every time you use it! Alas, mildew and hard-water stains will prevail if left unattended. FREQUENCY: Every two weeks keeps it classy. 6. How often should I clean my carpet? And, by “clean” we mean the other machine, not the vacuum (which you should do once a week). This depends on the traffic area and the color. If we’re talking high traffic and a light color – you might end up dedicating your life to it. Fortunately, most people usually don’t mix the two. FREQUENCY: Assuming you have a non-white weave in an area that sees normal use, once a year should do. 7. How often should I mop my floor? If it's a waxed wood floor you shouldn't be mopping it at all. For the rest, it depends on the mess. FREQUENCY: Assuming we're talking about routine mopping, once a month is the ticket. ATGStores.com hopes putting these chores into a cleaning schedule helps you save time for the things that really matter.
