Famous Home Road Trip, Pt. II

Summer is the perfect time of year for a road trip, but it can be hard to decide where to go.

Yesterday, we started a list of famous homes that make for great stops when you don’t want to deal with the crowds (unless you’re headed to Graceland, which is definitely in our lineup). Most of our suggestions are a little more hidden away, though, which makes them great during back-road travels.

Let’s look at our last three historic-home destinations to see if we’ve found your favorite:

4. Frank Lloyd Wright (Spring Green, WI)

It’s true that structures designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright can be found all across the U.S., but as his own residence for 48 years, Taliesin represents something unique – a window into his life as well as his work.

If you happen to be in the southwest, you can also visit Taliesin West, Wright’s estate in Scottsdale, Arizona. This was once Wright's winter home, and now serves as the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

5. Edith Macefield (Seattle, WA)

You may not recognize the name, but Ms. Macefield is a local icon here in Seattle for her stubborn refusal to sell her home to developers. Now known as the “Up” house (after the Pixar film), it draws visitor from all over the country.

The home is located in Seattle’s Ballard community, defiantly wedged in between several big-box retailers. Visit soon – no one knows how much longer it will remain.

6. Edgar Allen Poe (Baltimore, MD)

Though perhaps better visited in fall, the Edgar Allen Poe House is a great summer road-trip stop, even if it’s not as spooky in all that Charm City sunshine.

Enjoy Poe’s poetry and the design of times past as you road-trip through these great historic homes across the US!
