Dust Prevention: Attack Dust at the Source

Have you ever dusted early in the day only to realize a few hours later it’s just as dusty as when you started?

It’s why people so often abandon the feather duster for the rest of their lives – no one ever got a prize for polishing the brass on the Titanic.

So, how do you make dusting worthwhile? For starters, you can find ways to do it less frequently by allowing less dust to filter through your home. Here are the primary sources:

Dirt, Debris & Plant Matter

This is just the stuff that blows through your house. More vacuuming (and maybe even rug beating) can help take care of this source.

Pet Hair

Pets are a big source of dust, much of which can cause irritation and plenty of sniffling thanks to the dander. Nip it in the bud by brushing your pets (outside) more often.

Lint

It’d be great if the only lint source in your home was the dryer, but it can cling to your clothes and shed in the house if your lint trap is full or your dryer vent is obstructed.

Make sure you keep your trap and vents clean, and it will cut down on the lint – as well as remove a known fire hazard from your home.

Your Hair

It’s weird how hair is hardly a big deal when it’s growing on our bodies, but as soon as it detaches it becomes a gross nuisance. If only there were a way to avoid the mess without getting crazy with the razor …

Instead, you can reserve your grooming for the bathroom where things are more contained, which can make life far easier for those with longer locks.

Textile & Paper Fibers

This is dust that comes from the things in our lives that break down over time, like paper and our carpet. There’s not much you can do about that, but –

A HEPA filter can help control this and other forms of dust in addition to using the tips above. Good luck getting dust-free!
