Devilish Halloween Décor
Freaking out kids with Halloween home décor is easy - sending the neighbors screaming for the hills as they frantically dial the HOA president is a sign of true vision.
Most of us fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to decorating for Halloween. For some it's cotton spider webs in the bushes and paper ghosts in the trees, and for others it's a jaunty scarecrow sitting in a rocker on the porch. This is all good stuff, but with a little creativity and razzmatazz these traditional standards can be amped up to give trick-or-treaters a really fun memory ... after the nightmares subside.
One of the quickest ways to add some spooky ambience to your outside décor is to crank up a fog machine. It could be a haunted graveyard, or a Whitesnake concert - both are considered equally terrifying. These things used to cost a fortune, but now even advanced models with timers and remote operation capability are very affordable. (Bonus move: flick one of these on and blast Whitesnake at the same time to achieve maximum terror.)
Garden sculptures add beautiful dimension to any landscaping plan, but even the most innocent-looking fairy, gargoyle or mermaid by day can look absolutely creepy with a little fog swirling around it at night. Of course, you can skip the dual-use aspect of "ordinary" statuary by using decorative tombstones, goblins, reapers and the like, although you may risk the loss of an invitation to the next community mixer.
Finally, you can bring the whole shebang together with a few well-placed outdoor lights. Regular string lights, specialty lights or even some light-based entertainment effects can enhance the eeriness of your design plan. The aforementioned Whitesnake tribute (played from cassette, for the sake of authenticity) and fog coupled with a few over-sized gnome statues and some strobe lighting ...
... Well, it's clearly a recipe for the kind of madness only found in rural post offices and Siberian prisons, but it's only once a year that psychological torture is socially acceptable. So take advantage!
