Comparing the look, feel and sound of a door knocker to that of a doorbell is like comparing Les Misérables to a Britney Spears concert – they both get your attention, but only one can do it without drawing your taste into question.

Knockers vs. Bells

Doorbells are purely functional creations and the fact that doorbell engineers have a hard time producing one that makes a pleasant sound proves the point. Have you ever rung a doorbell and felt bad for causing the awful noise inside? Why do so many of them have to sound like that?

Bing … bong! It’s literally a terrible note to have to start on as a guest or a host.

Door knockers, on the other hand, set a statelier tone. Go for it.

NOTE: It seems obvious that having a door knocker and a doorbell is like wearing suspenders with your belt, but this is now fairly common as door knockers have assumed a more decorative role. Even so, you’re not going to hurt anything by choosing a knocker that people would rather use instead of pushing a button.

We welcome you to discuss your favorite door knocker designs and whether you prefer a knocker or a bell.
