Blankets vs. Throws

Honestly, why are there even different words for “blankets” and “throws,” anyway? They’re blankets No, they’re throws. Pick one and be done with it! Ah, but it’s just not that simple. While Siberians may have a thousand words for snow, Americans have a thousand words for their favorite home-décor doodads. It may lack glamour and cultural depth, but it makes for a lot of great ways to organize things. And, that brings us back to blankets and throws. The long and short of it (pun intended) is that blankets are typically bigger than throws. How do you know? Well, there is no concrete rule, but if you’re of average height and it doesn’t keep your feet covered when you pull it up to your chin - it’s a throw. Incidentally, this is probably the most annoying thing about throws. They look great and it’s awesome that they don’t really need to be folded, but any utility beyond aesthetics or as an ad hoc snuggle device is basically reserved for children and the family pet. Being smaller and more decorative in nature, throws are also often more stylized than blankets. Many come with fringes or are woven of boucle - a type of novelty thread made with loose strands wrapped in loops that result in fabrics that are soft, puffy and, well, loopy. Blankets, on the other hand, start out big and just get bigger. Many are sized to adequately cover a particular size of bed, while many others seem like chance in the universe has determined their area of coverage. Fun Fact: It’s widely considered by many (including the Guinness Book of World Records) that, as of today, the largest blanket in the world was knitted by members of the Hatfield Christian Church in South Africa and spans an area of 557 square meters. (Disclaimer: Crocheted blankets are a different story. Daphne O’Connor, hailing from the good ol’ U.S. of A., snapped up that record in 2007 by single-handedly crocheting a blanket measuring more than 285 square meters. And, it only took her two years.) It’s a small thing, perhaps, but knowing the difference might help save you time when picking out a … whatever you want to call it. ATGStores.com hopes this helps you keep your bases – and your toes – covered.
