Best Room Designs for Bare Bulbs

As was recently demonstrated in our own Seattle Showhouse, a great designer can make a bare bulb work just about anywhere, but there are some places that naturally fare better with a little glare.

Where are these mystical places, and why is it that bare bulbs can work so well in them when there are all kinds of other bulbs? The answer in nearly every instance is – utility.

Bare-Bulb Bath Lighting

Of course, you already know about this one, and maybe you even have some vintage bulbs installed in your vanity mirror to give it (and you) a glowing, glamourous look.

But, if you don’t, it’s not too hard to add this look to your bathroom. You can go with the mid-century make-up mirror, or you can install a simple light bar above your current vanity to provide good light and a great pop of style.

Bare-Bulb Patio Lighting

There’s something magical, mysterious and mesmerizing about the glow of string lights at an outdoor garden party. Or it could be a barbecue – it doesn’t have to be fancy.

But, it could be fancy with those bare-bulb string lights! That’s the neat thing about them. Hang them up, plug them in and you’ve just added a lot of sparkling charm to your patio, party or no party.

Bare-Bulb Kitchen Lighting

This one can get a little tricky, because a bare bulb can provide great task light (see: bathroom mirrors), but they can also cause glare. So, what’s the trick?

As with real estate, it’s all about location. Place your bare bulbs under a shade, or in an elevated position, and you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Bare-Bulb Office Lighting

Style is what you’re going after when you choose bare bulbs for the home office, and it can work wonders. Imagine the warm opulence of gas lamps in a 1920s Manhattan brokerage office – that’s a handsome style right there.

You can recreate all these looks quite easily by adding bare bulbs to some of your existing fixtures, exploring how we used lighting in our Seattle Showhouse or by browsing ideas with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest
