Ashley Redmond Talks Affordable Design & DIY Style (Pt. II)

I)" href="http://ourblog.atgstores.com/ashley-redmond-talks-affordable-design-diy-style-pt-i" target="_blank">In Part I of our interview with Ashley Redmond</a>, Director of Design Services for online interior design firm Decorist.com, she told us about her initial steps in redesigning the company’s new office space in San Francisco’s Presidio.</br></br>Today, we find out how it all went, how much money they spent and why embracing affordable design in the new office is so important to Decorist.</br></br><em>This interview has been edited for clarity and length.</em></br></br><strong>Were you working within a budget?</strong></br></br>Yes. We definitely had a budget; it was $20,000 for the space.</br></br>I wanted to bring artwork in … some kind of textile installation … but those are very expensive. So, I was looking around for stuff, and I found this tassel art, and I said, “We’re going to all make these together,” and it became a project with the team.</br></br>The whole project cost about $200, and it takes up 12 feet of the wall. It’s a cool art piece that gets so much attention, and I love that we all did it together. <em>(Pictured above.</em>)</br></br><strong>Did you make any special considerations for personal space?</strong></br></br>In the individual offices, I did try to respect the person that was in the space; for the public spaces I wanted it to be … inspirational for what we do.</br></br><strong>Did you collaborate, and if so, how did you go about doing that?</strong></br></br>I did ask people what they would like in their space, and I kept getting, “It’s designer’s choice,” so it was pretty easy that way. But, I did ask what would be helpful to be more productive.</br></br><strong>How long did the project take?</strong></br></br>It was about three months.</br></br><strong>How was it received by the employees?</strong></br></br>Everybody was here working during the process, so it was like Christmas every day. Everybody was involved.</br></br><strong>What’s your favorite part?</strong></br></br>I love my office, obviously. And, I really love the tassel art. It makes me happy every time I walk in.</br></br><strong>Is there anything you would change now that you’ve been there a while?</strong></br></br>I feel the vision was completed in the way I had it in my mind. I feel like everybody’s happy, and that makes me feel like I did a good job.</br></br><strong>Anything you’d like to add?</strong></br></br>An important part of the design was making sure it reflects what we do at the company – creating accessible design.</br></br>I really tried to choose vendors and things that are affordable; things that aren’t out of people’s reach – like the rugs that we got from ATG. They make such a huge impact, and I love how that came out.</br></br><strong>We’d like to thank Ashley for her time, and thanks to Decorist for providing personalized interior design services for every budget!</strong>
