All About Living Room Tables

Peters-Revington Urban Heights Media Cocktail Coffee Table Set, Satin Nickel

Living room tables add valuable surface and storage space in a home. The variety of sizes and options allow you to coordinate one look throughout your space or mix and match to fit you style and existing furniture. ATG Stores offers seven categories of living room tables, but many can also be used in bedrooms, studies, offices and other spaces throughout the home.

The first step in buying living room tables is to decide what type of tables you need. Then, determine the size that you need. From there, narrow down your choices based on color, features and materials.

Types of Tables

  • End Tables are designed to sit next to a sofa, chair or bed, providing space to place a coffee cup, magazine or other items that should be within easy reach. These tables are smaller in size than most tables and range in height. It is important to consider the relationship between the table and the sofa it will sit next to. The top surface of the table should be relatively close to the height of the sofa arms, so a person can easily place their items on the table from a sitting position.

  • Coffee Tables typically sit in front of a sofa or in the middle of a sitting area and hold books, flowers or cups of coffee. They can serve many different functions depending on the use of the room. Most coffee tables are round, oval or rectangular. Shape should be determined by the amount of space you have and the layout of your room. Coffee tables are typically around 20” tall, so they are low enough to leave an open line of sight in a conversation area, but are high enough to easily place items on from the sitting position. Some coffee tables have glass tops, which should be avoided in an area where they might get broken.
  • Sofa Tables are taller than end tables or coffee tables and are usually placed at the back of a sofa or up against a wall as a buffet. These tables come in a variety of shapes, styles and sizes and should be selected based on the size of your sofa. The height should be approximately the same as the height of the sofa back and the table should not be any wide than the sofa. If you are using a sofa table against the wall, simply find the correct width to suit the space.
  • Occasional Table Sets usually include a coffee table and two end tables. This is a great option if you need multiple tables for one room, because they are already in a matching set. Each set varies slightly, so be sure the set you choose has all of the pieces you need. Consider the dimensions of all the pieces in the set before you make a purchase decision. Envision how each piece would stand alone before deciding on the set so you can be sure all pieces will work for your space.
  • Nesting Tables are great options for smaller spaces or for people who frequently entertain. These table sets include anywhere from two to four tables that fit together so they can be stores in the space of one table. They can be easily rearranged to provide extra surfaces for entertaining or when more table space is needed, then stacked neatly together when not in use. Select nesting tables based on the amount of space they occupy when stacked and how many individual pieces there are. These tables also come in many different finishes and shapes, so select an option that best complements your décor.
  • Tray Tables can either be portable or stationary, so the first step in purchasing a tray table is to determine whether you want to move it or leave it in one place. These tables are designed to hold a tray of food. Consider portability, size, style and color when shopping for a tray table.
  • Plant Stands are decorative surfaces to hold potted plants. There is a huge variety in shape, size, style and finish in this category, so it is important to determine what look you are trying to achieve. Also take into account the size of the plant you are displaying and select a stand that is the right size to accommodate that plant. Consider the size and height of the plant stand and envision it in the space you will place it in.

Other Considerations

When shopping for living room tables, begin by determining what types of tables you need. Then narrow your selections by size, color and price.

You may also want to consider exactly how you will use the item. Do your end tables need drawers? Should they offer completely closed storage space? If you have young children around, consider getting rounded edges, as pointed corners can cause bumps and bruises.
