7 Wild Basement Remodeling Ideas

For whatever reason, the basement remodel often results in a “man cave” or some version of same (rec room, home bar, etc.), but if you could do it all over again how would you redesign your basement? We took an informal “sky’s the limit” kind of poll to see what kinds of ideas people had and we’ve collected the best of the best to give you some inspiration for your next basement makeover. 1. Indoor Swimming Pool Well, duh. We felt pretty sheepish for not having come up with this one on our own. An indoor swimming pool in the basement would be about the greatest thing ever, especially if things like water damage, evaporation, runaway humidity and toxic chlorine vapor were not issues. 2. Roller Derby Track Even if it had a really tight loop we still think this is a smashing idea. The only question is whether it would be a banked track or a flat track. A flat track seems that it would provide easier access and viewing given the likely space limitations, but the Banked-Track Basement Brawlers has a really great ring to it. 3. Anti-Gravity Chamber When we probed deeper to find out what this great mind was thinking, we only got a one-word response: “Magnets.” And, after a (very) brief stroll down Internet Lane we have to admit that this might work – if you’re really tiny and the magnets are really huge … and you don’t have a pacemaker. 4. Laboratory Ah, too much Breaking Bad, perhaps? Just make sure you have proper ventilation and a fire extinguisher at the ready, Mr. Pinkman. 5. Ballroom / Dance Studio We like this because it’s wild while still actually doable. A hardwood floor, some mirrored walls, a wraparound ballet barre and a disco ball (chandelier?) and you’re all set. Actually, come to think of it, if you picked up a set of sport cones you could have your roller derby track in here, too. 6. Backdoor Casino This was almost too much like “rec room” to make the list, but then, as it was explained to us, the vision here was more along the lines of a Prohibition-era swing joint with endless acres of felt stacked high with cards and chips rather than a place where everyone is using Monopoly money. 7. Pro-Level Boxing Ring / MMA Octagon Sure, why not? This enthusiast explained that the long-term effects of numerous concussions is speculative at best, and that all the footage we've seen of people's legs getting bent in the wrong direction is just media hype! Uh-huh. We know we probably sound a little soft, but please play nice and always wear protective gear when you're stepping into the Octagon, kiddies. ATGStores.com hopes this gives you a little creative horsepower for when you decide to redesign your basement, or any room of the house.
