6 Must-Have Garden & Landscaping Tools

Gardening and landscaping are great hobbies that can motivate you to get outdoors and grow some stuff – and the Internet is here to give you a handful of green thumbs – but you’ll still need a few essential tools to keep you happy in the dirt and out of the hardware store. So, let’s say you’ve got a brand-new garden toolshed and you’re in need of the basics; those must-have tools that most any garden or landscaping project will require. Further, let’s say your budget is $300 – what tools do you get? 1. Trowel / Shovel No dirt shall be dug without one unless you’ve got some gopher in your family history. Shovels comes in all shapes and sizes and it wouldn’t hurt to have a couple options for digging – perhaps a standard shovel for digging and a garden trowel so you can get up close and personal. Average Price: $15 (trowel) / $50 (shovel) 2. Rake Weeds, leaves, cut grass, clippings, dirt … there’s no end to the stuff you’ll need to rake up once you start your first landscaping or gardening project. Look for one with a sturdy hardwood handle, a tight ferrule and a head made of tough material like carbon steel. Average Price: $40 3. Hoe A hoe is essential for both gardening and landscaping for digging furrows and removing stubborn weeds. Some people tend to overlook this tool, but they do so at the expense of efficiency and many a backache. Average Price: $45 4. Garden Shears / Pruner You’ll need something for trimming and clipping once your landscaping project starts to flourish. Unruly hedges, bristling bushes and truculent trees will all need to be tamed from time to time with a snip here and a clip there. Average Price: $25 (shears) / $30 (pruner) 5. Wheelbarrow One might assume there could be but one design for a wheelbarrow, forged over centuries of use and perfected by space-age technological advances. And, that person would be wrong. Some are plastic and some are metal; some can be towed by a mower and some are meant to be used by hand; some have one wheel while others have two … The list of differences goes on and on. The idea is to pick one that’s sturdy, suits your comfort level and will fit in the space you have available for storage. The upshot is that the wide variety gives you many price points. Average Price: $100 Good luck with all of your spring and summer garden projects!
