5 Reasons Why You Should Keep Your Wall Clock

Ah, the wall clock – a throwback to a bygone era that has been crushed to springy, sproingy pieces by the computer in your pocket – has become as anachronistic as its name suggests.

Why have a clock on a wall at all when you could use that space to hang literally anything else that would be more useful? Even a piece of bad art would be better – at least it has the potential to start a conversation ...

But, wait. Maybe we’re not giving the wall clock a fair shot. Maybe there are some reasons to keep it on the wall, or to even hang one up if you happen to be wall clock-less.

1. Functional Art

Face it: Wall clocks can be cool. They can! A lot of them aren’t, it’s true, but some of them are and even if you don’t need them to tell you time, they can still have a positive impact on your décor.

2. Power Outages

Who needs a wall clock when your oven/microwave/coffeemaker/refrigerator/TV is telling you what time it is, too? Whether battery-operated or wind-up, wall clocks don’t need a power source to keep you on schedule.

Granted, knowing the time is probably the last thing on your list of priorities when the power goes out, and you likely won't be able to see it in the dark, anyway, but it might be comforting to know that it’s there when you need it.

3. Décor Variety

At the end of the day, a wall clock is something else entirely – it’s not another portrait of the family dog, a stock print of some artist you don’t know or a wall mirror hanging in exactly the wrong place. It’s different and, if you’ve got an eye for fun, it can be a unique addition to your décor.

4. Metronomic Zen

Remember that old wall clock at your grandma’s house that ticked so loudly you couldn’t even think straight … until the day you no longer heard it and realized you missed the sound? There’s a reason for that and it has to do with how your body keeps time.

Sure, you could get a metronome app for your phone, but a wall clock is so much classier! Plus, there’s always the hourly chime and the cuckoo option to consider …

5. Teaching Aid

Okay, so this is a stretch, but analog clocks are a thing and you should want your kids to know how to read them. It’s all digital out there, except in the places where it really counts – schools, train stations and old-timey bombs that need disarming.

Remember: You’re never too cool for school, or a wall clock.
