5 (Non-Electronic) Family Activities

Considering the incessant temptations of Hollywood and countless corporate tech giants, it’s no wonder so many of us have disconnected from one another while remaining plugged in to our TVs, mobile devices, video game systems, etc. It’s a digital epidemic … but summertime is the perfect cure. The hardest part may be convincing kids it’s possible to have fun without cable or Wi-Fi, but as adults who can still remember a time when “family time” didn’t involve earbuds it’s our responsibility to show them the ropes. So, here are some ideas on how to get started. 1. Road Trip! Why save the best for last? The road trip is the quintessential family bonding experience: trapped in a small space on the way to a foreign destination and forced to beg for access to restroom facilities. Sure, passengers can plug in en route, but placing a moratorium on electronics during the trip can help bring everyone together – even if the moment is laced with sulking resentment. 2. Camping! If you really want to disconnect, you can always take your brood far enough away from the source to completely cut the signal. The cold-turkey camping approach to non-electronic entertainment may seem severe, but the wilderness provides all kinds of opportunities to reconnect with the family – especially in the face of a bear attack or food shortage. 3. Board Games! Forget the naysayers; family game night can actually be a good time! It’s so easy to snap off the TV, set the phones to Airplane Mode and roll for a Yahtzee. It doesn’t have to be a four-hour blood match of Monopoly (and bankrupting 10-year-olds may not be the best family activity, anyway) – it can be a 45-minute game of UNO before dinnertime. And, speaking of ... 4. Cooking! No one’s pointing fingers, but even the most cursory sampling of today’s youth reveals a severe lack of kitchen prowess. Eating out and cooking with a microwave have gone from being timesavers to miserable crutches. There may be no greater gift than giving someone the ability to whip up a tasty dish. Use family nights to learn staple recipes that will last a lifetime. 5. Swimming! Sometimes getting that gadget away from your kid takes a little trickery. Present them with the cool, sparkling temptation of watersports and they might – might – voluntarily ditch their devices to take a dip. That way you can avoid the guilt of feeling like a tech tyrant and still have fun splashing it up with the family. ATGStores.com hopes these fun non-electronic summer activities give you some ideas on how to have family fun without being plugged in.
