5 Must-Have Beach Items
Going to the beach is great, but sometimes it can be a bit … labor-intensive. There’s always so much stuff, and while it’s only a short hike for the lucky few the rest of us have to hoof it from a parking lot or over many a dusty dune to get to the sweet spot.
So, if you’re the one who has to lug the essentials to your final beach destination, what is it that you bring? For this exercise, we’re going to imagine that we only have one set of hands and a fairly good distance to walk before we can relax.
1. Beach Bag / Backpack
This might be a given, but if there’s no one to help and it’s an all-day beach affair then you’ll definitely need a bag of some kind. Anything with strong handles and straps that can withstand the sand will work. (TIP: Loosely woven bags that are lighter in color will help keep it - and the things inside it - cool.)
Tech-savvy folks will manage to wedge all of these functions into one device, but you want to make sure you have: music, a phone, a clock and something to read. (TIP: You might want to think about investing in a screen protector or other kind of protective device to defend against water and sand.)
Author Douglas Adams reminded readers to never forget their towels when taking intergalactic voyages in his book, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” but what he didn’t mention was that the rule goes double for when you visit the beach.
4. Food / Water
Snacks, bottled beverages and other assorted treats are a must at the beach. The sun will sap your strength pretty fast and if you want to make the most of it you’ve got to think ahead. (TIP: Freeze bottled water and then pack it; it will thaw as you lounge and provide cool refreshment all day.)
There’s a difference between tanning and frying like a strip of human bacon, and that difference is called sunscreen. Bring plenty, too, because there’s always that one person who thinks they are immune to sunlight’s effects.
