5 Best Frozen Drinks for Cinco de Mayo

As you get geared up to celebrate the Battle of Puebla (aka Cinco de Mayo), you may want to stock up on some ice as the main ingredient for these tasty beverages that will put a little extra shake in your maraca – even if you decide to leave out the hard stuff. To keep it easy, just remember that each one-serving recipe starts with a cup of cubed ice. Throw in the rest of the ingredients, blend and pour. To make more servings, simply multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you want. 1. Margarita

2 ounces reposado tequila

1 ounce Cointreau (or triple sec)

1 ounce lime juice

1 lime wedge (for garnish)

Salt

Blend the first three ingredients with a cup of ice. Moisten the rim of your glass with the lime wedge, turn it upside down and twist in a bowl of salt. Add blended drink and garnish. 2. Scorpion

2 ounces light rum

2 ounces orange juice

1 ounce brandy

1/2 ounce orgeat syrup

1 lime wedge

Blend all ingredients with a cup of ice and serve with a lime garnish. NOTE: Orgeat syrup can be found in any specialty drink store and many grocers. 3. Pina Colada

2 ounces light rum

2 ounces pineapple juice

1 ounce coconut cream

4 maraschino cherries (two for blending; two for garnish)

Pineapple wedge

Blend all ingredients (just two cherries!) with a cup of ice and serve with cherry and pineapple garnish. 4. Strawberry Daiquiri

2 ounces light rum

1/2 ounce lime juice

2 teaspoons sugar

6 big strawberries (five for blending; one for garnish)

Extra sugar for garnish

Blend all ingredients (just five strawberries!) with a cup of ice. Moisten rim of your glass with the strawberry wedge, turn it upside down and twist in a bowl of sugar. Add blended drink and garnish. 5. Frohito (Frozen Mohito)

2 ounces light rum

1 ounce mint syrup, divided

1/2 ounce lime juice

Mint leaves for garnish

This one is trickier, because you’ll have to make the mint syrup. To make: Blanch two large bunches of mint leaves that have been stripped from their stalks in a pan of boiling water. Strain the mint and save one cup of the water. Blend the mint and reserved water on high, remove and strain the mix through a fine sieve. Mix what remains evenly with sugar (1:1) to create your mint syrup. Now, blend a 1/2 ounce of the syrup with the rum, lime juice and a cup of ice. Pour in a glass and garnish by pouring the remaining syrup on top and adding a mint leaf.
