4 Ways to Keep Your Toilet Cleaner

Cleaning a toilet has to be the worst household responsibility in the world, bar none. Telling kids Santa doesn’t exist, burying dead family pets and doing week-old dirty dishes can’t hold a candle to scrubbing a toilet. Gak. But, it’s gotta be done, and since today is World Toilet Day (yep, totally a very serious thing that supports better global sanitation) we thought we'd give you some helpful tips on how to keep it clean. Remember: The evil irony is that the less you do it the worse it is when you finally doo-doo it. So, let that be Trick #1 in our list of ways to keep your toilet cleaner: Trick #1: Frequency There is no right answer to how many times you should clean your commode in a given period of time. The most fastidious among us recommend a weekly scrubbing – once every week! That sounds like a lot, though, which suggests that the number of people using the facilities may be a deciding factor in frequency. Even so, it serves as a good baseline. Trick #2: Beware Toilet Tablets Those little bleach and dye lozenges that you plop into your toilet tank may seem like a convenient way to keep things clean, but many a plumber (and toilet warranty fine print) will warn you that these can cause problems. The bleach may be too concentrated and rot rubber components, while the blue dye is … just dye. But, blue is pretty, so there is that. Trick #3: Vinegar Vinegar is a rock star in the toilet. Pour half a cup of white distilled vinegar in your toilet tank and the other half in the overflow pipe every month and you’ll have done more work toward keeping your toilet clean than the last couple thousand flushes ever could have. You can also pour it right into the bowl and leave it to loosen hard-water stains and rings. Trick #4: Sodium Borate (Borax) This old-school trick has fallen by the wayside in many households in favor of flashier branded alternatives, but borax needs no fanfare because it just works. The secret is in the soak. Sprinkle it into the bowl at night and scrub it the next day for a sparkle so snappy you’ll be sad to see it go. ATGStores.com hopes these tricks help you keep your toilet bowl as white as the ones you see on TV and hope all of you take a moment to learn more about the efforts behind World Toilet Day.
