10 Cool Office Features Every Cube City Needs (Part II)

Yesterday we talked about the perils of Cube City and how some companies like LEGO, Google and Braintree have taken very creative steps toward making their workspaces more enjoyable.

Naturally, not every company is going to have the resources or willingness to commit to such bold action, but employees can dream. And, so we asked, what features would you like to see in your office?

Here’s a look at the final five entries on Top 10 list:

6. Free Food

There’s no data anywhere on the Internet to objectively measure what company serves the best free food (thanks, Google!), but Google definitely serves the best free food (thanks again, Google!).

Google’s gourmet cafes, which serve free chow to its employees pretty much whenever they want it, are the stuff of legend. One ex-Googler reported the company spends $80 million a year on food alone. Yum.

7. Kids

Employer-provided daycare is obviously a huge boon to employees, and some studies have shown that office daycare can increase profits by mitigating lost productivity and increasing job satisfaction.

Besides, isn’t all this for the kids, anyway?

8. Massages

Cube City is a warzone and casualties occur every day in the form of warped spines, carpel tunnel damage and kinked necks. Given the research, what’s more surprising is that there isn’t already a law that makes onsite massage mandatory.

Seriously, scientists are now saying that sitting at a desk typing for eight hours a day is more deadly than smoking. Think about that before you trade in your sweet landscaping job to become a desk jockey.

9. Gym

Consider all the money you’ve wasted on gym memberships over the years. Would you have been more likely to go to the gym if you could’ve gone for free at work?

Maybe not, but we do know two things: 1) You wouldn’t have wasted all that money and 2) that alone would have made you happier and healthier. Win-win!

10. Outdoor Work/Play Areas

It’s no accident that lucrative tech firms call their work facilities “campuses” – they all have plenty of picnic areas, grassy fields and walking paths to enjoy in the cozy Silicon Valley sun.

No one’s asking for the world on a platter, though. We’re sure most people would be happy with a couple picnic tables and a grassy strip to stretch out on during the summer months.

What would you like to see in your Cube City?
